Anyone Like to Sing?

If you like to sing and have a good time, you will like to be at Rock Star Karaoke. They offer a real band that plays for karaoke singers. They play classics, and other types of songs.

Whether you can carry a tune or not, why not have fun. Go to www.rockstarkaraokenyc.com and learn more about it.

You will find Rock Star Karaoke playing at Hank's Saloon at 46 Third Ave at Atlantic Ave in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn on Wednesdays and at the Canal Room at 285 West Broadway at Canal St. Their website will give you times and locations.

Happy singing.

Thanks @hhusted. I also recommend Iggy's on the UES - 2nd Ave and 79th st. Low-key, but a very supportive atmosphere. No live band, though!

What do they have for music? A karaoke machine? I went to a party last year and that is what was used. I think it is much better if a live band was used instead of a machine. Don't you think?

Arlene's Grocery on Stanton St in the LES does karaoke with a live band every Monday at 10pm. I recommend going - there are always the drunk crazy people, but I've seem some real rock vocal talent there.

Actually, BroadwayBK, I'm glad you mentioned it because I think I'm stir-crazy enough lately to go do something as silly as having a Karaoke night at Arlene's Grocery...

I haven't been in a while, but there was a catch back in the day. There was no screen to follow along with the words - you only had the music sheets in front of you. There was a guy on stage whose job it was to help the drunks to follow along with the music, though. No idea if they've switched that up or not.

Sounds...sloppy. Which may be quite okay for late wintertime stir-crazy behavior.

It was definitely sloppy. Except for the few people who were practiced performers - then it tended to be awesome.

Interesting place. If you don't know the song well enough you are out of luck. Hey, maybe I'll stop by some time and check it out.

If you have a bunch of friends Sing Sing in the East Village is fantastic. My friends and I are karaoke machines and we go just about once every two weeks or so. You get the private room and you just press a call button and a waitress comes in to bring you beers. I've been to a couple of places in K town, too. Those are far and a little more limited with songs, but they bring you snacks, they're open til 6 am and you can smoke . . . you know, if you're a karaoke party animal who's into that scene.

I've heard bad things about Wicked Willies in the East Village - apparently it's a very frat-boys-and-beer-pong kind of karaoke scene...

So if you're looking for more of a mingling with others who you might not know kind of Karaoke experience?

Sing Sing sounds like a lot of fun, @JenMac, but likely not so conducive to interacting with people who ar enot already in your frienship circle...

@hhusted I like to sing to myself that's about it ... friends have tried to drag me to Karaoke but I have strongly resisted ( am quite shy hate making a spectacle/ drawing attention to myself). It also doesn't help that one of the said friends is a bonafide songwriter/artist who is quite big in Japan.(http://www.last.fm/music/Senti+Toy)

@uptowngirl I am with you there - no one has ever gotten me to do karaoke in a public setting, and they never will, not matter how many drinks they buy me.

I managed to get through exactly one karaoke moment in my life, and that was a rendition of "Mercedez Benz." And this was only because the entire rowdy karaoke crowd joined me within a couple of syllables of the song. Basically, I just had to hold the microphone. There's no other way I would have otherwise sung that entire song on my own.

Oh, people. You miss on the fun. I love to sing and when I visit a karaoke place, I end up singing my heart out. I don't care if I sing off-key or not. I love to be the center of attention and to clown around. Singing in front of a crowd does not bother me.

@uraniumfish - I'm not sure - but apparently it's the drunken frat-boys-girlfriends that do the singing (and maybe the frat boys who lose bets/dares in the middle of the night) - while beer pong and shots reign supreme - it's so noisy you can't even hear the singing.

I'm proud of my rendition of "Folsom Prison Blues" at Iggy's, I must say. Good times.

@ajadedidealist: I would love to hear your rendition of "Folsom Prison Blues" sometimes. Maybe we can sing it together sometime, since I grew up with Johnny Cash and know his songs very well.
