So, I imagine many of us (especially of the fairer sex) are fans of certain low-fat frozen yogurt/fake ice cream companies. Personally, I can't live without the delicious air-inflated aspertame-soaked goodness that is Tasti-D-Lite. What about you all? What's your ice cream of choice? Tasti-D-Lite? Crema Lita (is that still around?) Pinkberry? Or plain ol' Ben and Jerry's or Haagen Das?

Actually, I do not eat ice cream. It has too much fat content and other ingredients that are not good for the body. I prefer frozen yogurt. Yogurt has good bacteria. I hate anything sugar-free because the aspertame taste horrible. When I do visit Tasti-D-Lite, I request the yogurt, not the sugar-free type either. My second favorite frozen yogurt is Haagen Daz. It is more expensive but I love the taste.

But - but - how can you guys resist delicious Tasti-Dis? Granted, I'm convinced their only real flavors are Brown, Beige, White, and Pink - and everything else is just a lie! - but still!

I know, ajadedidealist. But when you get up in age, you have to be concerned about your health first. Actually, people in their '20s and '30s should be careful about their health now so when they do get older, they will have heathy bodies.

So when I visit any desert place, I consider my health first and foremost.

@ajadedidealist do you know that the Tasti-Delite store on 77st and Lexington Avenue is shuttered? I thought it was doing roaring business as it always seemed busy no matter the season. I used to love Tasti-Dis then switched for a bit to Pinkberry but personally I would like to see NYC get the LA based chain Coffee Bean and Tea leaf for I so love their totally wicked ice blendeds- Starbucks just doesnt quite fill the gap.

@ajadedidealist doesn't Zabar's have its own brand of Fro-yo ? and what of the delicious fro-you at Bloomies Forty Carrots restaurant ? that seems to have a huge fan following (me included) .Also have you ever tried Sedutto on 79th and 1st? supposed to be quite good according to several Yelpers.

So, weirdly, I was craving pineapple yesterday and ended up wandering around for an hour, trying to find someplace to quench this craving. And it seemed all I was seeing was greasy foods or obscenely caloric desserts. Why is fruit so damn expensive in this city and so unavailable?

Sorry, just had to insert that among all this ice cream talk.

@uraniumfish huh? unavailable? doesn't your street have a fruit vending cart? I quite happily patronize my local fruit vendor who happens to have great fruit at quite reasonable prices almost all year round. Usually he goes home to his native country during the winter months but this time around he seems to have stayed. Just last week thinking that he was away I went to my local Morton Williams to buy navel oranges and tangerines but when I was walking back home I noticed that the fruit cart was its usual spot on my street corner and he was open for business as usual. Needless to add he had much bigger oranges and tangerines than the ones that I had just bought at the grocery store and Uraniumfish he had pineapples too but they were not cut and cleaned as you would find in a deli. Another great place to buy fruit at relatively inexpensive prices is in Chinatown along Mott and Mulberry Streets and of course at Trader Joe's. I definitely find the prices there much lower than my local d'agostinos or Morton Williams.

@uptowngirl I am with you about Coffee Bean ... I lived in LA for a bit, and that place is probably the only thing I miss about the entire city.

@Uraniumfish I'm also curious where you were wandering around and couldn't find pineapple? It's definitely not in season, but I can think of a couple places out here in Brooklyn where I could pick it up if I was feeling the urge.

@uptowngirl. No, I haven't tried Zabars, but I am keen on TCBY (The Country's Best Yogurt) over on 86th St. and York - creamy goodness, with dangerously caloric Heath/Mars Bar/etc waffle cones. Pizza there is pretty good as well!

I heard about TCBY. Someone told me they sell really great ice cream and yogurt. If it sells different flavors of yogurt, that is something I will have to check out soon enough. Thanks for the tip, ajadedidealist.

@ uptowngirl I was in Brooklyn somewhere near Fulton. I dunno, they haven't heard of fruit cart vendors there. Near the Fulton Mall and that madness? I guess if you know the are you'd know exactly where to go, but it seemed like I was hitting on hot dogs and greasy spoons everywhere I turned.

@uraniumfish poor you I can totally relate for there are days when I crave for fruit myself and it so happens that those are the days when I dont have any at home.

I love fruit. I often put fruit on top of yogurt. I buy different flavors of yogurt and then put fruit on top of it. What a desert.

The green markets are pretty great. I find myself waiting without fruit at home, just because I know in a couple of days I can go to Union Square and get apples as big as my head.

@Uraniumfish and BroadwayBK remind me to try and get you both passes for NYC's annual Chocolate Show later this year..Its usually held in November and as I mentioned in another post I have a friend who works with them and always invites me but I am always traveling at that time of the year. If she does give me invites this year as well will be happy to pass them on ...
