Relocating to NYC from NJ?

I make an entry level salary and can afford around $1000, maybe $1200 on my own (which isn't much, I know). I have a roommate, but she currently lives in Albany and does not have a full-time job, so landlords are understandably wary. Together we can afford up to $1800. Any tips/neighborhoods you'd recommend looking in?
