How safe is 16th and S Van Ness Street?

I live there right now. I often walk alone, even at night, and have never had a problem. There is generally a decent amount of vehicle and pedestrian activity at most times of day. However, I have heard there are gangs, and have also heard of what seem to be random assaults and maybe murders. So statistically, I think it is pretty unsafe. Everyone has a different tolerance for these things, so that's probably about as much help I can be unless you have specific questions.
