Man Caves in the city

In a city starved of space , these guys are making sure they have a small space to call their own..

Wonder if a woman will ever get that luxury?

I think if I lived with my family in a cramped NYC apartment, it would be ideal to have a place where no one else was allowed in. But I do think the macho element of these "man caves" is kind of idiotic.

I like that they mentioned that it's a space for his diplomas. Way to go, buddy. Way to go.

@uptowngirl I think it's brimming with the sensitive artist-types as well.

@everyone Weird... I never knew guys were so territorial? Any hypothesis as to what causes this phenomenon?

@BroadwayBK I'm a writer - I can't live with anyone without having a room that's all mine to think in. So I guess I understand the impulse very well and don't think you necessarily need to be a writer to need your private space.

Yeah... Like I said, space is necessary for me too. Not so much because I am a writer, but more because I am an introvert and need that alone time to stay sane. But then, writers tend to be introverted.

@everyone I really don't have any space to call my own whether in NY or in HK. I tend to do all my writing on my dining table but then I have the entire house to myself after the hubby leaves for work though I must admit I would like a place to keep all my books and papers that I tend to use for research.

I understand the instinct - like you, @uraniumfish, I'm a writer who loves the idea of having a separate study in which to work. But then again, I largely work at home. If space was already at a premium I wouldn't insist on having a woman-cave - that seems a bit jerky, somehow.

@ajadedidealist Agreed, totally a bit jerky.

@ajadeidelaist It's not jerky, it's practical, in my view. When I lived with a man I didn't exactly have a woman cave, but came to see the practicality of just having a little corner that was off-limits. Before I had this I worked on the dining room table and my man would be like, Let's have a dinner party! You're not writing right now, right, so let's set that table! It hurt a little bit to have to gather my stuff up every time, which is why I then developed a woman-nook.

@Uraniumfish - if both men and women need a bit of "private" space, then I agree, it's not jerky (goodness knows I like my space). But if you're in NYC, and have limited space (as 99.9% of people in NYC have), and either gender goes "I need a whole ROOM to myself!" it seems a bit...less than ideal. A corner I can understand! Even a nook. But a whole ROOM (especially when it's a "man-cave" for Men Only!) puts me off a bit.
