Locals' Favorite Shoe Shops

My personal list of favorite shoe shops is pretty small, as I am picky and not rich, making a good shoe shop hard to come by.

I am actually a fan of Urban, NineWest and the like, but with this list I wanted to include places that are stylish, affordable, and a bit off the beaten track.

I'd love to include your suggestions!

1. Shoe Market
160 North 6th Street
Brooklyn, NY 11211-3202

This place is amazing - they stock quality shoes that aren't too highly priced, and they are always right on the money when it comes to current trends.
2. The Shoe Box
537 3 Avenue
New York, NY 10016-4168

Above is just one of three locations in Manhattan. It's true that there are a lot of highly priced pairs here, but this store often has amazing sales (the only time I go). I've brought home pairs of Sam Edleman's and DVF's for 50% off.

Thanks for the list. I don't buy shoes that often, but the next time I do, I'll take a look at those on your list and see which one pleases me more.

@BroadwayBk no DSW???so love their flagship NYC store in union square. I have scored some great pairs there especially since I have feet that are hard to fit....

I'd be very happy to see this list fleshed out, since I don't really know where to get good quality shoes in the city. Being an arched-eyebrow European snob on the subject of good quality shoes, I would love to actually find a decent place. all of the shoes I own--I kid you not--were bought in Europe.

@uraniumfish the shoe department at both Bloomies and Bergdorf's are supposed to be excellent according to my friends and they are forever having sales in fact Bloomies has a huge sale this weekend if you are at all interested. My husband seems to have great luck at Century 21's shoe department just last week he bought two pairs of Trickers Shoes for $70 each. Trickers are an old established English shoe company who make shoes for the Prince of Wales. Alas I have had no such luck at Century 21 and tend to do all my shoe shopping online at DSW.com.

@uptowngirl Gasp. You buy shoes online? How is that possible? Don't you need to try them on first?

A slightly more niche suggestion - East Side Kids on Madison and 94th has a great selection of children's shoe-wear, as does Little Eric's on Madison and (I think) 84th.

@uraniumfish I am notorious for buying things online and then returning them if I dont like the fit etc that's why I seem to patronize DSW they have easy returns at their stores.

Two other well regarded shoe shops in the city seem to be -
Tip Top Shoes
155 West 72 Street
New York, NY 10023
(212) 787-4960

Harry's Shoes
2299 Broadway
New York, NY 10024
(212) 874-2034

Both these stores carry a wide array of brands and have extended ,hard to find sizes as well. In fact Harry's even carries a line of Vegan shoes for those folk who abhor wearing leather.

Yet another shoe shop in the city which seems to have legions of fans is the Orva Shoe store which has its flagship store at 86th street and Lexington Avenue. The store carries shoes for all the family and has brands like Geoxx, Mephisto, Kenneth Cole Reaction., Bruno Magli, Uggs, Timberland, Nike, Puma, Ecco, Birkenstock, Taryn Rose, Rockport, Florsheim, Bostonian, Stride Rite, All Genders Flip Flops and many more.
Orva is at
155 E 86th Street,
New York, NY 10028

@uptowngirl: Harry's Shoes. You found my shoe store. :) Just kidding. I have the same first name. Any time I can get a good deal on shoes I am all for going there. Thanks for the info.

@uptowngirl I've actually never been to DSW. It seems like a big, warehouse-y store, am I right? I tend to gravitate to smaller shops for some reason, though I'm not opposed to the large.

@BroadwayBK it is a big warehouse type store but I usually check out there collection online and head out to the store when I want to return/ exchange a pair that I have ordered onliin . Recently they had a huge Gucci handbag sale .. it was a real blow out Gucci bags for $300 ..needless to add they sold out online within seconds ..I am not a big monogram bag fan but I can think of tons of friends around the world who would have been happy to pay out the 'moolah' for the said bags..
