If London has its elephants, NYC this summer has its mannequins

The real estate landscape of London this summer has been littered by the figurines of colorful elephants which have been adorned by designers, celebrities and sports persons in order to draw attention to the plight of the South Asian elephants. New York City has similarly unveiled its own exhibit of brightly colored mannequins which have been decorated by various designers and are installed between 34th Street and 42nd Street along 7th avenue which is Garment District in NYC whose survival is being threatened by escalating rents and dwindling production houses. The display called Sidewalk Catwalk was unveiled on 24th of June and is due to run until Labor Day. Have a look I quite like Diane Von Furstenberg 's mannequin. You?

There are a number of pictures I like. I think the creator had a big imagination.

Ha, excellent! Although I still miss Cowparade. Cowparade was the best! I'm in Copenhagen right now and the apartment below me has a Cow Parade doormat and I got so homesick for a second!

@ajadedidealist I don't recall having seen the Cowparade in New York City though have seen some of the installations in Mumbai. When was the CowParade in NYC?

Cowparade is an public art exhibit which features life size cows which are decorated by famous local artists. Apparently Cow Parade came to NY in 2000 and more recently in 2008 in Flushing, Qeens, NYC. Have a look at the NYC cows..

@Uptowngirl It's nice enough that they're doing this, but dwindling fashion production houses seems less of a worthy cause than the dwindling elephant population!

Some of my best childhood memories in NYC were going around New York City that summer with my mother trying to spot all (or the majority of) the cows in Manhattan. I hear cowparade is coming to Rome, where I'll be next month - I'm so excited!

@DBlack I am all for animal conservation but the fashion district has been an integral part of the NYC economy for years . Its as much a part and parcel of NYC as Wall street unfortunately rising rents, production costs and other factors have now decimated this industry which is now in a somewhat crisis situation. I dont know if this installation can help in any way but at least it will make New Yorkers aware of its plight.
