Feng Shui and Vatsu dictate real estate purchases

With more and more Asian buyers investing in NYC real estate , Feng Shui is becoming an important aspect of a purchase decision.

When we bought our apartment my husband had a Feng Shui master come in and advise us on the decor( mirrors everywhere, art depicting social situations). I know many of you are renters but does Feng Shui ever figure in your decision to rent a place?

Don't you think this is just indicative of finicky buyers in a tough real estate market?

I wouldn't say that I consider feng shui when I'm looking at apartments, but space is a definite issue - you need to have enough room to live properly.

I remember reading an article in Cosmo or something - I was in high school at the time - about feng shui for single ladies, and it suggested putting up pictures of couples or something like that. That seems like it might be more depressing than anything.

@Uraniumfish actually I think for many Asians these considerations dictate any purchase no matter what the condition of the market

@uptowngirl Probably true, but in the case mentioned in the article, the reason the buyers were able to request a different floor was probably because the building was quite empty and other floors were available. Maybe in a stronger market, there wouldn't be that much empty space and an Asian buyer might decide it made sense to buy up the space for financial reasons, feng shui or not.

I have my own set of finicky concerns - I'm obsessed with high ceilings and architectural moldings. I'd take a high-ceilinged studio with wall moldings and hardwood floors over a modern/carpeted 2-bedroom any day!

@Uraniumfish I don't think so.. they seem really finicky about all this.. for example the Chinese don't like the number 4 and I remember telling a Singaporean friend a couple of years ago that we were considering looking at an apartment at 444, 86th Street and she deterred us by saying it would be extremely unlucky for us due the building number.

Wow, @uptowngirl! That's something I wouldn't have thought of. Do you think many people operate with these superstitions? Then again - many apartment buildings don't have a 13th floor. So perhaps there's something to be said for our "weird" superstitions as well.

I wish I had the luxury of taking feng shui into account when looking for an apartment. Sadly, the only one I can ever keep in line is the bed not facing the door rule. The rest is at the mercy of whatever space is available.

The bed not facing the door? Why is that so bad?

@Uraniumfish - my big pet peeve isn't the bed facing the door, but a large mirror facing the loo! I had that in a client's house and it was really unnerving having to stare at myself while performing, erm, private business. Clearly designed by a man used to facing the other way!
