Best Steakhouses in the City?

When friends visit me from overseas they always want to have a steak meal in NYC. I am not a great lover of red meat but do go to steakhouses where I often order the chicken or fish while my dining companions dig into a rib eye or a filet mignon. Time Out New York recently had a listing of the best steak houses in the city http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/restaurants-bars/80571/best-steakhouses-in-new-york-city-new-yorks-best-steaks and the list includes one of my favorite restaurants, the weirdly named Quality Meats which offers good steaks but also has some great homemade ice creams ( coffee and doughnut icecream) and an excellent green goddess avocado salad. So do you enjoy a good steak dinner and if you do where do you indulge?

Peter Luger, but bring a big wad of cash, since they don't take cards. (which I find very weird indeed).

This butcher is really expensive and really gorgeous:

Japan Premium Beef
57 Great Jones St
(between Lafayette St & Bowery)

They sell Japanese-style beef from grass-fed cows. Very high quality, though obviously it's only tangential to your post here--you have to actually cook the meat yourself at home! Anyway, it makes for a special meal.

@uptowngirl Yes, it's definitely one of those places packed by the ten thousand other people who want to do the same thing you want to do on any given night...well in advance is a good idea.

Peter Luger is great but it's definitely really simple. You order steak for 2 or steak for 3, etc. You don't get to choose what kind of steak. And, the sides are really plain. It's a great experience but not the best steak I've ever had. Call me crazy, but I still think the Palm consistently has the best steak around. Granted, my favorite one is in LA but the midtown one almost has the same ambience (grumpy old men with dirty martinis). Minetta Tavern has a great filet as well.

The thing about a good steak is that it's the MEAT, not the cooking, that matters - just go to any high-end butcher, sautee the fillet lightly in some extra virgin olive oil, season with salt and peppercorns, and I promise that you WILL have a far better meal for much less money than you'd pay at a steakhouse.

@Uptowngirl: I'm not a meat lover either. I will go to restaurants that serve fish mainly. However, I will eat an occasional turkey burger.

@hhusted and @ajadedidiealist I understand both your view points .. I am mostly vegetarian at home.. used to cook meat and poultry but have given up that and only eat non vegetarian when I am out at a restaurant. Its not any religious belief but just a self imposed control on consuming meat. However when I notice that when friends visit from overseas they almost always want to experience a NYC steak house!

It's true a steak is only as good as the meat, so it pays to splurge at an excellent butcher and cook it at home. And it's a bit like my experience with wine: after you've had really great wine, it's impossible to go back to drinking cheap bad wine!

Peter Luger was one of those places we went with the family on special occasions. Since I didn't know any better I just assumed it was the best steak you could get. But then I was on a visit to Dallas some years back, and realized I don't know from steak. The steak I had in France was also amazing. Now I'm a lot more discerning about my steak, let's just say, though Peter Luger is still a damn good steak.

@uraniumfish I want to give Japan Premium Beef a try. I've heard about it before, but I haven't bought steak there yet because then I'd be obligated to go straight home so the meat won't spoil.
