It all depends on what block you're on and who you talk to. While Lawndale has changed in the past few year, it hasn't done more or less than any other area in the city, especially the Northeast.
Some neighbors complain about how minority's have taken over and many have given in to what people in the Northeast call 'white flight". They also believe that the change is the cause for many of the problems in the Northeast.
Other long time neighbors say that the neighborhood has been enhanced by the diversity of the newcomers to the area. These folks believe that there is still a sense of neighborly spirit and look at the future in a positive light.
The best way to get a feel for the neighbors is to visit the area. Being able to see the neighborhood in action should help grasp what it's really like. Take a stroll through and see for yourself. There is no better opinion than your own.
