How difficult is to find resident parking (with an S-permit) in Hayes Valley?

In the middle of the day on a weekday, it is probably no problem since you are not right in the middle of the action like you would be in say North Beach. But once everyone comes home at night time and people come in from outside the city, this can be lot more challenging. I thinking people are allowed to park without a permit at night time.
