"Sunshine & Golf"

Pros: Beach, boating, fishing, pools all year long. Vacation resort feel. Restaurants and shopping wonderful.. Many outlets near. Cons: Hot humid with bugs most of the year. Residents spend time indoors alot because of the tropical storms and mosquitos in the summer. A/C runs almost all year. Not a great place to raise a family. Schools are school of choice (not neighborhood) and children can live miles from their schools. Not to mention only a few are considered good.
some other fun facts: Golf courses galore, empty playgrounds all summer long, many many retirees, religious with many churches to choose from, many of the full time residents are born and raised and never left or returned to Fort Myers.
Overall If you enjoy sunshine and can tolerate humidity and heat for most of the year, this is a great place.... to retire.

"If it wasn't for the beach . . ."

. . . this would be just another small town in Florida. Fort Myers, a small city located in the tropics on Florida's west coast, 70 miles south of Sarasota. We share our climate with Haiti, Cuba and Puerto Rico, so that may explain the laid-back tropical attitude here. It is particularly evident in the workmen, who come to quote your job, then disappear, never to be seen again. Our city government functions the same way.

Fort Myers is a little confused about its identity lately. The downtown, a work forever in progress, has been renamed several times, most recently THE RIVER DISTRICT. What was once a small sleepy town unknown to many, is now full of hi-rises that loom along the river with no rhyme or reason. This town needs a plan!

You may think I dislike it here, but I don't. It is hard to dislike such a beauiful place, especially when the WEATHER CHANNEL is broacasting the February temperature in the northern city where you used to live. The sun shines and that is worth some minor inconveniences.
