"A nice little town within commuting distance"

Erie is a small town that lies just west of I-25. There are some nice farming areas around the town and many of the homes in town are smaller and have been there for many years. There are also some newer areas, which have some very nice homes and are the reason the median priced home is so high in Erie ($325,174). There are also some residents who commute to Boulder and Denver as many work in professional, scientific and technical services. The median household income in Erie is $107,064 which is almost double what it is for the rest of the state.

The area itself is pretty and the cute little homes in town lie along tree lined streets. The old town hall is a cool brick building and there is a nice community vibe here. The location is great for anyone who needs to work in the city but wants to feel away from it all when they are home. While there aren't a ton of restaurants, there is a good amount for a town of this size (pop. 19,272), and plenty within a decent driving distance. Overall, I think Erie would be a nice place to call home.
Pros
  • country living feel
  • more affordable than Boulder
  • nice communty feeling
  • centralized location

"Growing small town. Great centralized location."

Erie is small town that is growing at a reasonable rate. It is a politically active community with diverse views. The planning area for Erie is approximately 40 square miles. The town is in 2 Counties, Boulder and Weld and also 2 school districts, Boulder Valley and St. Vrain. Erie has lots of parks and open space. The topography is flat to rolling hills with incredible mountain views. There is a centralized recreation center with an indoor pool, basketball and racket ball courts, climbing wall, free weights and circuit training machines and much more. Next door is the Erie Library with a large childrens section, books on tape, DVDs and Blue Ray videos. Plus electronic books. A new skate park was just completed in late 2012 next to the community park with ball fields. Housing options run from old town homes built in the early 1900's to brand new subdivisions of single family detached homes. There are also newer condos and townhomes and paired homes. One of the best things about the homes and neighborhoods is the variety of home styles and subdivision designs. Unlike some areas that have mainly one massive never ending sea of the same cookie cutter homes, Erie has numerous smaller neighborhoods with a variety of diverse designs and neighborhood amenities and styles. The Colorado National Golf Course is a newer golf course that offers amazing views. There is a new Velodrome being built, scheduled to be completed in the late spring to early summer of 2013, it will be one of 3 cycling arenas in Colorado. There are lots of small locally owned businesses and restuarants to choose from. The location on the east end of Boulder County plus the Southwest end of Weld County provides easy access to Boulder, Denver and Ft. Collins. A short 5 - 10 minute commute to Louisville, 20 - 30 minutes to Boulder, 30 - 45 minutes to downtown Denver and an hour to Ft. Collins. Plus for plane enthusiasts and small plane pilots it is the home of the Erie Municipal Airport with Erie Airpark neighborhood that has homes with runway access. With so much to offer in such a convenient centralized location, it's a great place to live.
Pros
  • centralized location
  • country living feel
  • more affordable than Boulder
  • nice communty feeling
Cons
  • not as many restaurants
  • need for continued commercial development

"Erie has good views and more affordable housing outside of Boulder"

Erie is a nice refuge east of the city of Boulder and not that far of a drive into the city for commuters. There is a mix of new subdivisions and the older historic neighborhoods near the centre. There is a good sense of community near the centre and many families have been there for several generations. There are some farms in the area especially as you go further east, but I think most people do commute into Boulder or even Denver for work. There is a country feel out near Erie and the views of the mountains are spectacular.

There is a good mix of the old and new in Erie, there is an interest in the arts and music. The community stage in Old Town Erie hosts local bands and you can often find people mingling and dancing to the tunes. Erie schools are part of the Boulder Valley School District (the strongest district in Colorado in most regards) and kids can attend the schools in the Erie area or if their parents work in Boulder, many kids open enroll into the schools in the city of Boulder.
Pros
  • more affordable than Boulder
  • country living feel
  • nice communty feeling
Cons
  • 30 minute drive into town
  • not as many restaurants
