Alphabet City is still a little shaky after midnight; but, now it's pretty much condensed to east of Avenue B. The East Village isn't crime free by any regard, but it's pretty safe. I've walked home in the wee hours from the East Village numerous times and never felt imminent danger. There's just too many people out and about.
