Jenmac, first of all are you born and raised in the east village. When you say gentrified, do you mean improvements by making the area more white, cause you had Greenwich village, the village period, and soho. You can't make improvements like making the area middle class cause it's always been that. I've lived here all my life so I know what's what. Yes thank goodness the Giuliani era cleaned up and disposed the drugs and it's addict's. All over there's crime , but I'd take a walk at 3 AM. Except for all the bars and obnoxious drunks throwing up all over the place and being a bunch of loud mouth's while some of us are trying to sleep then going back to their suburb homes, it's pretty good. Let's not forget that stupid, idiodic Santa claus day, where they all dress up as Santa's for another excuse to drink . To anyone who reads this ,just trying to state it like it is.

Anything east of Avenue C is a little sketchy after midnight but everything else is pretty safe. Don't get me wrong, it's not crime free. And, the Alphabet City area is still being gentrified, but there are always so many people out that it's not a horribly dangerous neighborhood. I wouldn't walk around alone late at night. But, I wouldn't eschew living there either.
