Is the 165 East 118th Street (East Harlem) area safe for a late 20s female student?

Hello, I am a female graduate student from India. I am planning to move to the Graduate Center Apartments at 165 East 118th St., New York, NY 10035 this fall. While the apartment building is very safe and nice I am slightly worried about the 0.2 miles walk from the 116th Street Subway to the Apartments on 118th Street. Do you think this walk and the 116th Street Subway would be safe if I am not late at night ? Thanks a lot.

When you get out of the subway at 116th, walk along 116th to Third, then up to 118th. It's much more lively than Lexington, which is almost entirely residential and can be a little too quiet at night.

swc06002 Thanks, for your answer. BTW is it really scary ? I have been to that place and it didn't look too bad for me, honestly. However, the statistics of crime and news suggest it (precinct 25) is near the top in terms of violent crime. Are there neighborhoods which are known to be relatively safe vs very unsafe ?

eHarlemTV I live very close to there and have for seven years. Every night, around 10, I walk my dog. It has never been scary. In fact, more often than not, I see one or two young women walking alone. There are a number who live in the area, and their numbers are growing. I have several single female friends who live nearby. We all agree that unless you are part of a gang - the source of much of the violence - no one really pays any attention to you.
