Is 101st in East Harlem a safe area?

My friend and I, both 21 are looking at a place to rent on 101st street between park avenue and Lexington. Were here from Ireland and dont have much knowledge about the area except we've heard it's east Harlem. I'm not one to be prejudiced and wouldn't turn my nose up at the ares just because of the name but i know there are parts considered worse than others. Is this area going to be safe for us? We are looking for bar work too so We may be coming home late at night.

My wife & I have been living on 102nd Lex/Park for 10 years. We have not had any incident ourselves. After the drug dealers were removed about 7 years ago, the immediate neighborhood became trendy and the rents increased significantly, however each little micro neighborhood can be very different from adjoining ones. 101st St. between Lexington and Park is a beautiful area with many private townhouse homes and a few small multiple residences. There is a modern condominium on the corner of Lexington. Down towards 3rd Avenue are mostly tenement buildings. I walk my dog around that block at any time of the night through the wee hours of the morning and not seen any trouble. The caveat is that crime can occur anywhere, you need to be alert wherever you go. If you're a little tipsy, take a cab.
