Rent or not to rent: Ellis and Franklin

Hi Everyone,

I just moved to San Francisco and found a nice apartment off of Ellis and Franklin in Civic Center. Do you think it is a safe place at night if I am a female with a small dog? I know it is close to Tenderloin, so I figured I need to ask!

Thanks...

So, here is what I would say. Wherever you choose to live on the eastern portion of SF is going to be a bit of an adventure. I would not recommend walking your dog in the middle of the night by yourself anywhere in the eastern part of the city. (I don't think I would go for a nightime walk by myself in the backstreets of the City--though in my younger days I did and managed to survive with only a couple of close calls.)

Specifically by the corner of Ellis and Franklin, I used this website called CrimeMapping.com to check it out and here is what I found. Within the last six months, within 500 feet of that location there has been:

No Murders
6 assaults (1 a sexual assault in early September which took place or was reported at 9 pm--that was one block south from the Franklin and Ellis)
6 burglaries
3 robberies (2 right at that corner)

This is all, however, pretty typical crime from North Beach to the Mission (SF's overall crime rate is twice as high as the national average).

I am not trying to scare you--living in the City is an adventure and so long as you use common sense and don't let yourself be an easy mark, you should be okay. That said I would not take my dog for a walk by myself after dark routinely.

Anyway, check it out for yourself and good luck!
