Bushwick/Bedstuy Safety?

I'm currently looking for an apt in Bushwick or Bedstuy. I'm wondering particularly about the area by the Gates subway stop. How safe is the area around there for 2 young 20 year old females? Also, what would be the best street/area for us there? Thanks!
