How is the safety on Hancock Street in Bed-Stuy?

My roommates and I are looking to move into Brooklyn after graduation (college). We are four white females who know our way around the city a respectful amount. We are looking at a place and are really excited about one on Hancock Street. I've been reading a lot of mixed reviews about the area. My main concern is feeling safe while walking around while the sun is set.
