Is the Willard-Hay neighborhood safe for families?

I've been warned of crime in this area but from what I have been able to uncover it is fairly family friendly and definitely worth taking advantage of the lower priced homes. I would love to hear from anyone familiar with the area. Is it safe enough for a family with three little kids and a husband who often works late? Thank you!
