Would you recommend the West Portal neighborhood in San Francisco for families with kids?

West of the Mountain Davidson there are a lot of good family neighborhoods. West Portal is actually known for its young families and couples. There are a fair number of private schools in the area, and things are a lot more toned down relative to the Castro and Mission to the east, so you don't have to worry about gangs and violence as much.
