Washington Heights, New York City - any areas to avoid?

The further south you are in Washington Heights you are, the better off you are. Once you get that high up, you're kind of in no man's land. Transportation is awful and everyday conveniences (like grocery stores) are sparse. It's not unsafe, per se, it's just a pain in the arse.
