"Quiet Town, with very little amenities"

South Salem is a large and long town. The most desirable section of South Salem is Vista, which is less than 2 minutes from New Cannan. People love Vista, because your not in the middle of no where, you have many neighbors with plenty of room also, you have Oakridge Commons just a little bit up RT 123. The part of South Salem that is along route 35 is very remote. Now that the town has become much more populated and there is more traffic, there has been trouble with route 123 1) being way too tight 2) very dark at night 3) arrogant drivers. They need street lights along 123, so we can see where we are going at night! You can feel very isolated around here. There isn't many shopping options around town, you usually have to go to Norwalk or Stamford or Danbury for your shopping. School District is excellent.
Cons
  • Can feel quiet and isolated
  • lacking diversity
  • no night life

"Diverse Town On Nassau Most Western Part"

Elmont is a small town adjacent to Franklin Square, Valley Stream and Floral Park also Stewart Manor. Elmont is a very diverse community with a great commute to NYC. Elmont has some great parks such as Avriell Blvd Park right by Tulip Ave. Cost of living is quite cheap for Long Island. Crime in recent years has been decreasing very nicely.
Pros
  • Close to NYC
  • Diversity
  • Cheap Cost of Living
Cons
  • Lots of traffic, especially when Belmont is open
  • Schools at the elementary level need improvement

"Just Go To Franklin Square"

Many people go to Garden City South, because they can't afford Garden City the village, but still want the Garden City title. In Garden City South, you have Franklin Square 17 SD, and the same style homes, same everything, GCS is just north of Hempstead Turnpike, You pay at least $2,000 more in taxes just for that Garden City title, Rath Park section of FS is SO much more desirable.
Pros
  • Close to NYC
  • Park and Recreation
Cons
  • Higher taxes just for the GC title
Recommended for
  • Singles
  • Families with kids

"Great Hamlet Close To NYC"

Franklin Square is a hamlet adjacent to Elmont, Garden City, West Hempstead and Valley Stream. The Franklin Square School district is excellent. All Elementary Schools, John Street, Washington Street and Polk Street all go to the H Frank Carey Junior HS. The best part of Franklin Square for young families is the "Rath Park Section". In this part of town, your just south of Hempstead Turnpike and North of The Southern State Pkwy. It borders the Dogwood Section of FS which is considered to be the best, BUT it doesn't have FS SD. It has Valley Stream 13 SD.
Rath Park is the highlight of the neighborhood. This is a very we'll kept neighborhood and so close to NYC. Hempstead Turnpike has so many fun restaurants to go to also! I've lived here for 14 years and don't regret a single moment!
Pros
  • Close to NYC
  • Great Family Community
  • Parks and Recreation
  • Strong school districts
Cons
  • No Train Station
