Is N Homan Ave / W Division St area safe (especially at night)?

I'm from New York trying to take some guitar repair classes here (at Specimen) for a few months. I wouldn't be living in this area, but the people I'd be staying with told me this area was dangerous. Is it, and could I safely take public transportation here at night? (Sorry if this question appeared multiple times; not sure how to use this forum.)
