YMCA Anyone

No, I'm not talking about the song by the Village People. I am talking about the fitness center for men and boys.

Park Slope Armory has just opened today including a $16 million, 140,000 square foot YMCA area. This place will be open year-round and will offer to all many kinds of sporting events as well as fitness rooms, arts, and cultural activities.

The 115-year old armory will become useful to people instead of being just an eye sore. At least now, kids who live in Brooklyn, will have a place to go after school, or during summer months, when they want to play games. This will help keep them out of trouble.

Individual memberships are $40 a month. Families who sign up will have to pay $72.

The new facility will officially open its doors to the public January 30th. For more information just go to www.ymcanyc.org.

Wow this is great .. wish I lived in Brooklyn :).. living as I do on the UES we have the 92nd St Y as a center for sports, fitness and cultural activities but it is by no means as cheap even though it doesnt have a membership per se but you have to pay per class and the charges are quite hefty -http://www.92y.org/ . I even mulled about joining the Asphalt Green fitness center(http://www.asphaltgreen.org/) which is also on the UES and is slightly more reasonable It also has an aquatic program ( I am a keen swimmer) but I have still to get around to joining so far I have been happy using my appt building Gym and the public pool close by at Cherokee Place which being an outdoor pool is only open between memorial day and labor day like most other public pools in the city.

I guess we have to make do with what we have. There are a lot places I like to go to if I wasn't working so much. This is why I have a portable gym in my apartment.

Cool. So, I've written before that I'm really happy with the YMCA facilities in downtown Manhattan ($78 membership, clean workout facilities, free classes, and a swimming pool). But $40 sounds like an excellent deal.

I know the 92nd St Y does cultural events of all kinds, but do they actually have gym facilities too?

@uraniumfish The 92nd St Y isn't affiliated with the YMCA (http://www.92y.org/content/frequently_asked_questions.asp), and is a part of the Jewish Community Centers Association of North America, but they do have a health and fitness center.

I've also made mention of the great YMCA facilities in Brooklyn. When I first moved here I went to just about all of the facilities, and as I have a family membership with a Florida YMCA location I was allowed to use that membership for a certain amount of visits at each center. I have yet to check out this new Park Slope facility, but rest assured it's on my to do list.

There is also another YMCA facility opening in Ridgewood, Queens; student memberships are offered at $35 a month and adult memberships are $40.

Visitors who have YMCA memberships at other Y's throughout the country should recognize that most of the New York facilities participate in the Away program - meaning that you can use your membership for visits at facilities in the city.

I don't bother to go to the Y or any gym for that matter, because the showers are usually filthy. The guys stare at you, especially if they are gay. I went into a gym three years ago to try it out. I went out and worked out, When I went to locker to take a shower. There was this pervert sticking his head into the shower stalls, looking at the guys as they washed up. He was staring at their private parts. He even did it to me. I told him to get lost. After that experience, I stopped going. I bought a portable gym and work out in my own apartment.

@hhusted well I can vouch for the Bed-Stuy and Greenpoint YMCA locker rooms - the women's at least - and can tell you they are pretty spotless. The Bed-Stuy location has an especially awesome sauna.

Great. I'm glad to hear that some places are good to go to. It gives one a much better choice.

I've actually been to quite a few gyms in this city - NYSC, Crunch, and private gyms like Printing House (whose facilities are absolutely jaw-dropping: state of the art equipment, view of Lady Liberty from the treadmills, roof deck and pool) - and I've never actually had a problem with a dirty locker room or creepy gym-goers.

But you haven't been to the men's locker room have you BroadwayBK. I've been to three NYSC clubs and found two to be dirty. The third one just had a bunch of perverts and gays around, which made me feel very uncomfortable to shower.

obviously I can only report on the women's locker rooms; I had no intentions of doing otherwise.
