NYC and Jobs

I have been hearing a lot of rumors about how bad the economy is in the city right now. Yet, a friend of mine was talking to a street vendor, and the guy told her he was making tons of money. He was making hundreds of dollars a day, sometimes even thousands. He even told her he did not believe in the recession, that it was something made up.

Anyone have any thoughts or have heard anything solid about NYC economy and what will happen in the near future?

I think the recession is a definite reality...know of friends who have been out of a job for over a year now (especially in the fields of banking and finance). Don't know what the street vendor is selling but many people are still hurting in spite of all the pink pages declaring that the worst is behind us. I do sincerely hope though that the tide turns in 2010 and the good times begin roll once again.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I try to stay positive however, despite the numbers, lack of employment in the city, and many other factors. I heard from reliable sources that other areas of the country are doing much better than here. But a new stimulus package is being purposed now which should help to boost the economy here. At least I hope that is the truth of what I heard.

There's fantastic jobs to be had for people with medium to high qualifications. Those jobs haven't disappeared. What's not out there are entry level positions, or if there are, there's about 10,000 applicants for each one. Also, there are these new HR mass-scanning procedures in place at big companies, so unless your resume pops up a 4.0 average and an Ivy League school, good luck. What an absurd market to apply for a job!
