Spinning in NYC

It’s my least favorite time of the year for heading out to the gym. It seems like all gyms suffer from the same syndrome at the start of each year – they are overcrowded with a pack of New Year’s resolutionists. However, I intend to brave the crowds and branch out from my regular local gym in search of a good spinning class. Preferably one that doesn’t cost thousands of dollars.

Obviously my local gym (selected for its location, literally a short block away) doesn’t offer spinning classes, so I’m looking for a place that lets you pay per spin or buy a block of classes. Anyone have any recommendations?

I only found a couple of places (The Studio on East 72nd St and SoulCycle in Tribeca) and neither were what you would call very affordable.

Hmm, I'm no spinning expert, but I found the YMCA surprisingly good all around, at least the one branch in Chinatown that I frequent. A regular membership is $78 a month (what a great deal!) and they have several kinds of classes that are included in the membership price, also spinning classes. It's only a few dollars more a month to get a membership that's valid at every facility in the city. Although the quality of each facility varies, I imagine you can find several locations that are adequate and that offer spinning classes, so you get a choice of class times. Could be an affordable alternative if you don't find anything else.

It is important to work out. The winter proves hard for many people because it is too cold to get out. They need a motivating factor to go to the gym. I am lucky I have a small gym in my apartment. So I get to work out when I want. I know not everyone is so lucky. I guess the best incentive is to think abut the end results of going to the gym. Sometimes this is enough to encourage people to get out and bear the cold weather.
