Safest neighborhood in New York City?

I have some friends who are looking to relocate to Manhattan in October, and the subject of safety is the number 1 issue for them.

What is the safest neighborhood in New York City?

Thanks for your advice.

That's a really tough thing to gauge. In my opinion, I would vote for either the West Village, Gramercy or Sutton Place. But, the neighborhoods are all so close that crime isn't absent anywhere.

JenMac - what about at night time if you're walking home in those three neighbourhoods? Would be feeling safe at all? Is it pretty busy at most hours?

West Village, UWS and UES, Gramercy, and almost everywhere in Manhattan. Manhattan is a great place, stay below 96th St, it gets fairly rough there.
