What is the best neighborhood to live in, near JFK?

I'm relocating to NY from CA, for a new job as a flight attendant. I don't know ANYTHING about NY neighborhoods, cities, burroughs. I wont have a car, will be using public transportation, and ideally would like to be within 30 minutes of JFK airport. I'm coming from a small town and would like to live in a SAFE place. Please help. TIA
