Is Little Italy in New York City a good place to live for families with kids?

For my money, I'd have to say no. Most of the buildings are really old and they were built for extremely impoverished people. Little Italy used to be one of the biggest slums in the city. And, while it's not even close to that now, the apartment sizes are the same because the buildings are the same. It's pretty pricey, really crowded and noisy. And, a large number of the buildings, because they are so old, are walk ups. I reckon it's pretty difficult to get a stroller up six flights of stairs multiple times a day.
