Does anyone know how Lafayette got it's name?

It's very French sounding.

The little town of Lafayette east of Boulder (where I now work actually) was founded in 1878 by Mary Miller an important citizen. She and her husband, Lafayette Miller, moved to the area to farm land when they took advantage of the Homestead Act in 1871.
