Is Greenpoint safe for families

My family and I have been offered my husband's late parents home in Greenpoint. It is a nice brownstone home and I am told the neighborhood is nice but we are from Montana (husband excluded) so I am worried how safe it will be to raise our kids. I am told the rent can be very high so we are lucky to have a home provided but my concerns are how to teach our teenage boy to be safe
