A Trip Down Amnesia Lane

I was trying to come up with my favorite restaurant in the Bay Area for another post and I was remembering how one of my very favorite places to get a burrito, this place in Berkeley on MLK and University isn't there anymore. (These were perfect burritos as far as I was concerned: nice thick tortillas, black beans and cream cheese, just enough salsa to bring out the other tastes, but not soggy. And they wrapped them perfectly if you were taking it to go. It was always packed but somehow, inexplicably, its gone.

So that got me thinking about other places in the Bay Area that we loved but that have gone the way of the Dodo bird. What places did you once love that are now gone or so altered that something essential about them has been lost?

I understand that there used to be a haircut place in Berkeley named the Rape of the Lock, after the Alexander Pope poem but then the feminists forced them to give up the moniker in the name of political correctness in the 80's. I'm not sure if this quite fits what you mean, but I thought it interesting to share.

You know the place that I miss. There used to be a coffee shop in Rockridge called the Edible Complex where I used to have great times. Now there is a Crepevine there. It is okay, but I can eat there without getting Nostalgic.

Oh and Black Oak books bit the dust a couple of years ago too--noe that spot on Shattuck right by the northwest corner of campus seems so bare.

I was shocked to see that Cafe Mozart had closed. Me and my wife went there way back went (it had been around for ever) and we loved its kitschy old-world feel. It was way overpriced (probably why its had a hard time in this economy) but it really did the whole upscale French restaurant thing well. So sad to see it go.
