Not so Good Neighbors

"Good fences make good neighbors," Frost wrote.

I don't know about fences, but I know that apartment living brings you into closer contact with your neighbors than you might like. Last weekend my neighbor decided that he wanted to play his Death Metal CDs for five straight hours. I understand that it was the middle of the day on a weekend and that he doesn't really have anywhere else to play it if not here--afterall he doesn't really have anywhere else to play his "music"--but still, five hours seems excessive.

I suppose I am asking for advice on what I should do, but also wondering about other stories about neighbors stories.

That's what I hate about apartment living. You end up getting into your neighbor's business no matter how hard you try not to.

It was really bad because I was trying to get some papers graded that day and it just made it impossible. Next time I will just leave but it just doesn't feel right to be chased from your own home.

Maybe you should try to make friends with your noisy neighbors and then you can maybe ask them to turn it down without making it in big deal.

I'm not sure how I would go about doing that.

It' s easy. You just go up, knock on their door and say, "Hey guys, I like your music but I really got to get this work done. Could you turn it down a little bit, just for today?" And then you maybe invite them to your end fo the year party or to go out to drinks with you and your friends later. Then, next time they turn up the noise you have a way to ask them to turn it down. Also they just might be more consider in general.

I don't think I would quite be able to pull that off. They would see right through me. Also, I do see me and those guys going out for drinks. I doubt we have much in common.

That might work if you were a girl, but it might actually just get them mad at you and make matters worse.

Then maybe your wife or girlfriend?

I live alone, unfortunately.

Then you can become friends with me and I'll come over and take care of them for you.

My neighbors basically share a driveway with us, and they have about fifteen kids in that small single-family home (okay, so they have more like three kids, but it sounds like about fifteen when they all play outside). Sometimes they spill over onto our drive. Sometimes they don't, but it sounds like they do because there is only a tiny fence separating the two properties.

I guess it could be worse...
