The Scenic Skyline

Check out the New York City skyline from the best possible angles.

1. Top of the Rock: I maintain that 30 Rockefeller Plaza allows for the most breathtaking view of the city - and from here you can see the same view from inside or out, depending on the weather and your own mood.
2. Brooklyn Bridge: an awesome view that should be reserved for pleasant weather; from here you can not only see the skyline but up and down the East River.
3. The Hotel on Rivington (THOR): extremely expensive and since your room consists mostly of glass, it's likely your stay will be visible to much of the neighborhood, but the view from here is entirely worth it.
4. Hotel Gansevoort: dress up in your swankiest outfit in order to peruse the roof deck featuring not only a spectacular view of the city and the Hudson River, but a pool and a bar.
5. Brooklyn Heights Promenade: stroll around the promenade and take not only the skyline but a rare moment in New York where you aren't being pressured to purchase anything. The promenade sits on the East River in front of some gorgeous Brooklyn properties.
6. Empire State Building: Reluctantly added (suggested by JVS) because of the long and intense line you must wait in before reaching the summit. The straight-down view is spectacular, though - but beware the outdoor observation deck during the winter months. It's a bit chilly/windy up there, and a bit crowded. Indoor observation deck located on the 86th floor.
7. High Line: (Sufficiently praised by Uraniumfish) 1.45 miles of park built on a section of the abandoned elevated freight railroad of the West Side Line and winding through the Manhattan neighborhoods of Chelsea and the Meatpacking District. Several entrances throughout.

This one's a bit dark, but the business school at Columbia University has a rather tall building compared to the others immediately nearby, and on September 11th I was uptown, and we all went up to the top of that building to see the distinct absence of World Trade Center on the skyline downtown.

I was at a party at One Hanson Place in Brooklyn, the historic building with the clock, and man was THAT a skyline view.

And just to prove my point about rents coming down, even they're advertising 30% off on rents for the new year. Look:

@uraniumfish Seems like rents in luxury apartments are coming down more than anything else, as no one can afford to live in such places :)

And you need to add the Empire State Building for sure to the list.

Yeah, JCS, I went up to the Empire State Building and what a view it was. Wow. I couldn't believe what I saw. I could see the entire island of Manhattan and parts of NJ, especially since it was a clear day.

@ JVS The High Line is really wonderful, I can't praise it enough. You're essentially walking through the city streets, but above all the traffic. There are little nooks and places where windows in the floorboards let you look down at the cars passing below. Since it's the height of an elevated train, you also get a gorgeous view of the river, and walking the length of the park you kind of peer in between the various the city buildings. You're in the middle of the city but somehow in the middle of a great quietude. I've written about this place elsewhere on here. They plant sweet-smelling grasses, and there's places you can lounge and read books, plus they have playful little constructions that children seem to love. The High Line seems like such a generous thing, I'm so grateful someone bothered to do something that wonderful.

@ JVS Oh, and it's actually the "Meatpacking District" I've never heard of it referred to as the Meatpackers. Though I think I saw that term elsewhere on this site and my view is it's probably in error--

Where's the High Line or the "Meatpacking District?" I heard of it, but am not sure where it is located.

If you've never been to Meatpacking you're missing out on many glorious opportunities to spend money....

@ BroadwayBK True, and where else can you wear all your shiny tops and sequined shoes except on a night out in the Meatpacking District.

How about one suggestion that's free and requires little to no waiting on line? The Staten Island ferry! I just discovered it when "touristing" around the city trying to show my English boyfriend around - if you go at sunset, you get fantastic views of the sun setting over the Statue of Liberty, which, incidentally, the ferry goes very close to. If you stick around for a coffee at the other end and then head back, you can have night views of the southern skyline of the city - just as gorgeous!

Spending money. Not exactly my favorite pasttime. I took a test one time and found out that I am a saver and not a spender. I only buy something when I need it not when I want it. So going to a place just for the sake of buying does not appeal to me. But if I can go to a place to listen to nice music and be entertained, I don't mind going.

@ajadedidealist I so agree with you the Staten Island Ferry is a great 'freebie' in NYC always take visiting friends and family for a ride on it to view the stunning NYC skyline. Much better than sending them on a tour bus.

@ BroadwayBK Why thank you for finding my praise of the High Line sufficiently enthusiastic to include in the list...I feel honored.
