The destruction of Brooklyn's Soul Day

Today i.e. 11th March ground was broken on the much delayed and much debated Atlantic Yard Project in Brooklyn. This much delayed and fiercely resisted project will see the construction of a new home for the NJ Nets at the soon to be constructed Barclay's Center as well as three new residential projects. The project which makes use of the eminent domain clause has been delayed by lawsuits filed by residents who are resisting it. What do the Brooklynites in this forum think of the project? do you agree that by going-ahead with the project the authorities are going to forever change Brooklyn's character?

That was the site that was in dispute last year or the year before, because many people living in the area didn't want to lose their homes and apartments. And other factors were involved. I didn't even think Ratner would even get permission at all for the go-ahead on the project, considering the amount of people that were going to lose their homes.

I hate this project. I hate it. Are they seriously making another neighborhood of glass condos that no one is going to move in to? Seriously? I'm with that guy who proclaimed today the Destruction of Brooklyn's Soul Day, as well as the person who said this in the comments under the Times blog:

"I won’t count on this as being the end. I can still remember when they said that the Freedom Tower was built originally in 2004 when that so-called Freedom Stone was being dropped, but it went into 2-3 years of redesigning instead. I wouldn’t be surprised if this would end up as a false start. It’s clearly an abuse of eminent domain to take away someone’s property for a private use rather than a public use, which is what it’s supposed to be for. Although I was unable to attend the event myself, I hope those that did made a lot of noise."

@BroadwayBK Agreed. I have so much complaining to do about this awful project, I don't even want to get started.
