Sonic public sculpture in the subway
I just played with this sonic sculpture today while waiting for my train. I just love public art that's so well conceived and such a delight in the most unexpected places:

I looked at the link you provided. That is really cool. Maybe one day I'll run into it.

Lovely! Did you guys see those saffron curtains a while back in Central Park, maybe 2-3 years ago? Those made quite a stir - what did you all think of them?

What's the BMT Broadway line? Sorry, I don't take the train as often as I should...
This is completely unrelated, but I love those stained glass windows that (I think) the Q train rides by, and as you look out the window the procession of them seem to be in motion...

@BroadwayBK I don't know what BMT refers to, but that sound sculpture is on the N/R/Q platform at 34th Street. And I love it too!
I think I know what you mean about the images that seem to move, but wasn't that on the A/C line in deep Brooklyn? Maybe we're thinking of different things. Anyways, there's a long series of colorful slits that look like a moving image when you speed by. But I can't remember where it was now.

@BroadwayBK @DBlack I've seen those panels that looks like they move as you go by, too. But... I also don't remember where they are. I don't think they are on the A/C, though. I haven't taken that line in years.

Oh, those are gorgeous, @Dblack! Sure gave me a bit of a shock the first time I rode by them, though...

@Uraniumfish Have seen those sensors at Herald Square ..very cool
@BroadwayBK I once had to research the NYC subway for a project and remember reading about the BMT line which stands for the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit corporation.-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn-Manhattan_Transit_Corporation

I love public art! Then again, I'm a sucker for all sorts of public art/media/works. I love city-sanctioned buskers, the poetry on the subway walls, etc.!

@ajadedidealist you mean the Gates in Central Park.. they were saffron fabric installations which people either seemed to love /hate much like the The Waterfalls installation in 2008. As for me I loved those saffron gates but didnt quite care for the waterfalls..but I too love public art it enhances the landscape of the city.

Yep, the Gates! Didn't the artist who did those just pass away quite recently? I thought they were...fine. They were saffron gates. I didn't quite see what all the hubballoo (my new favorite word!) was about.

@Ajadedidealist: Sorry. I haven't been to the Gate so I'm not sure about the painting or the artist.

I really wish there was more public art in this city. Or sometimes it seems like some of it is overlooked because the city can be so overwhelming.

I think he's quite cool, too, although I'm not sure I really "got" the gates. I'm not great on contemporary/abstract art - give me the Old Masters any day!

@ajadeidealist Christo is the artist, and in more recent years his wife Jean Claude has become a partner in his projects. They're pretty famous for these massive public sculptures. A while back they covered up the Reichstag in Berlin. It's their thing.

There's a big outdoor sculpture garden in Queens - have to look up the location and name - and although it's fantastic, I've often wished it wasn't segregated out in Queens in its own park. Public art is really much more wonderful when you can interact with it in your daily life, like the sonic sculpture.

@hhusted Christo's not a painter. He's a sculptor, or maybe an installation artists if you want to be precise, but definitely not a painter. What you see on the website are renderings they produce of their work, like covering up the Reichstag as Uraniumfish pointed out, so they can have something to sell to a general public. You can't "sell" the covering of the Reichstag and make a living from it.

Do you guys enjoy busking and buskers? I do - possibly because I have a friend who makes a living as a professional busker. Things like living statues, etc, are so cool and really make my day!
