Does anyone else ever get nervous walking under fire escape ladders? I always imagine one just plummeting down onto my head.

@JenMac Not as worried as I get walking under those temporary scaffolds. What's to guarantee the people who put them up are actually competent? And I don't want to be under the wrong one at the wrong time...

Gulp! I suppose the thing to do is avoid walking directly under cranes if it's at all possible - not to be overly paranoid, but it's worth beiing aware of one's surroundings, as it always is in NYC.

Couldn't you technically be hit from things from above at any moment, anywhere you are in the city?

@BroadwayBK Technically, yes, though it's best not to think about that too much or else you'd never make it outside your door. Realistically, though, everybody keeps their windows shut in the summer and cranks up the A/C.

Not that I think about it, it's actually sort of strange that I walk around the city all the time with no fear of falling objects. I guess it's true that people never think to look up.

I should start traveling with a titanium umbrella. Or just ignore it and get on with it! Life's life, I suppose, and as long as one exercises common sense one isn't at undue risk for bricks/cranes/dogs/whatever falling on one's head. Doesnt make it any less sad when it happens to somebody, though
