For tourists who enjoy Winter Walking

While I realize that walking tours may not be at the top of everyone’s list in this weather, perhaps you are visiting from Greenland and feel warm in this 20 degree windy weather. If that’s the case there are a number of wonderful walking tours to take part in this January! Walking tours offer historical perspectives that perhaps aren’t offered in those tiny blurbs in your Lonely Planet guide, and tourists have the opportunity to ask guides questions – a feature that tour books have yet to offer.

There are a plethora of tours taking place at the moment, even in this less-than-desirable weather.
Big Onion has been offering such tours for the better part of two decades, and this month they are introducing clients to some interesting enclaves of the city. Two tours that piqued my interests are the Multi-Ethnic Eating Tour (taking place January 8, 17 and 31) and Gangs of New York (January 15 and 25). Check out more tours at http://www.bigonion.com/.

Gotham Walking Tours offers three types of outings: food tours, ghost tours and indoor tours – the latter of which probably sounds spectacular to the frozen tourist. These include tours of major sites like Grand Central Terminal, Rockefeller Center and the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. For more info call 646-645-5782 or email lina@walkingnyctours.com.

Joyce Gold History Tours of New York won’t resume until March of 2010, but those interested in the upcoming schedule for that time can visit the website (joycegoldhistorytours.com) and join the mailing list.

I heard about the Gotham Walking Tours. I wouldn't walk in cold weather like we have been getting lately. But, as you stated, there are those who live in areas where the temperature is usually below zero. So they are quite used to it.

It actually surprised me a bit that so many walking tours were still going on. But then, I have been a tourist myself in this weather so I suppose the tourist show must go on even when most New Yorkers are staying indoors as often as possible.

I would love to go on the Multi-Ethnic Eating Tour but only if the weather improves .. actually have always wanted to take a chocolate tour of NYC as well.. a company called sweetwalks organizes them (http://www.sweetwalks.com/) and I believe you get to visit many of the chocolatiers of NYC on the walking tour like Jacques Torres, Vosges( yum hot chocolate)etc though I am not too sure if they conduct these tours in the winter months.

There is a snowstorm coming this weekend, at least that is what Accu-weather is stating. I can't confirm that, but if it does, how many brave souls will venture out to do any thing exciting. When tourist come here they usually ride on top of those special red city buses. If it snows that may not be a practical idea. But get some fanatical people here and you will never know what to expect.

Last weekend when it was just as cold I was out and about in the LES and noticed an open top tourist bus ferrying enthusiastic tourists around. I guess if you have paid mucho bucks to get to NYC for a holiday then you would want to make the most of it no matter the arctic winds and the foul weather.

Reminds me of when we used to stare agape at the German tourists getting into icy winter sea water at the beaches in Florida. Gotta get your money's worth.

I just heard that NYC was going to get 2 inches of snow by midday. So i don't think it will be as bad as they claim.

@uraniumfish That is the perfect comparison! Though my mom always insisted that people from colder climates thought that the icy winter sea was warmer than we thought it was. @uptowngirl The first time I ever visited the city I was seventeen and it was freezing here. That didn't stop me from waiting hours to go to the top of the Empire State Building only to get there and hardly be able to stand the icy wind. My tourists days are long since past, but I can sort of relate to those poor tourists atop the bus. Some part of them is probably having fun.

Well, I don't know about you, but I was kind of disappointed the snow we got overnight didn't last. But that is just the way it is. There will be many more snowstorms in the future.
