I actually always think about the possibility of being pushed on the tracks - morbid, yes. I like to think I am constantly vigilant. Anyway, this story is absolutely horrifying. And the guy is a cook at Cipriani! You never really think about how dangerous a train is when it's pulling up to the platform until someone is struck by one. I'm glad this lady survived, though. She's so lucky.

Craziness. What I want to know is, are they going to get this guy on meds? Because he's obviously insane and a danger to others. And he doesn't even know why he did it, which is pretty clearly a sign of derangement.

Well folks, I hope they do something to the guy. This way he won't go out and repeat it again. Maybe the next time his victim won't be so lucky. Horrible to say the least.

Pretty sure that guy needs to be institutionalized in a hospital facility.

Poor guy I hope he gets help, fast! He sounds like someone with a disease that needs to be treated, not a criminal. Not to say he shouldn't be punished, but I'm a firm believer in understanding that mental illness is not a choice!

I, too, always think about someone pushing me. My friends and I talk about that a lot. I think it's a pretty common fear. I never really stand far out on the platform because of it, sadly.
DBlack Aug 15, 2010
There are some platform areas that are incredibly narrow, too. I've squeezed through some of these spaces and felt really uncomfortable being that close to the edge.

There's a fair chance the guy is a sociopath, albeit a not-so-smart one. Either that or he needs to get on some anti-psychotics, and fast! @JenMac @DBlack, yeah the spaces around those walls where electrical generators are housed are pretty close the the tracks. It does not make for a fun time walking around those.
hhusted Aug 20, 2010
@DBlack: I believe you when it comes to tight spaces. Any time I get into a station, I have a tendency to look around me so I know no one is going to hurt me in any way. I guess we all should do that.

@hhusted I have never really thought about being pushed in front of a train but this incident is quite scary and I am now going to be careful while taking the subway.
ajadedidealist Aug 24, 2010
We should all remember however that this is an isolated incident - no need to get paranoid! I'll exercise common sense...but I won't be more careful than usual;
NeverSleeps Aug 24, 2010
Yeah, this is not only an isolated event, but also a rare one - usually we hear about people falling on the tracks by accident and being rescued by strangers, rather than attacked by them.
ajadedidealist Aug 30, 2010
It's fair to say, though, that it's never good to stand too close to the end of the tracks. (hence that "please stay behind the yellow line" exhortations that nobody seems to listen to.) Not because of random psychos, but because of more common dangers like tripping over your own high heels.

Hence the reasons I hate trains and subways.
uptowngirl Sep 01, 2010
@Freyj4 You really can't avoid them in a city like NYC.. how else do you commute? unless of course you have your own car
hhusted Sep 02, 2010
@NeverSleeps: Yeah, but it wakes you up to the possibility. When I do use the subway, I plan to take extra precautions. That's just me. You guys can do whatever you want, but I plan on playing it safe. You never know.
ajadedidealist Sep 06, 2010
@uptowngirl - which of course brings in a whole host of problems - dangerous or drunk drivers, accidents, bad weather. The sad but true story is life is pretty dangerous overall - somehow we have to manage through it all, and hope and pray that we get through the day.
NeverSleeps Sep 08, 2010
We are in New York City - you shouldn't need another news story to put you on your guard. I'm sure most New Yorkers play it pretty safe on the train platform.
uptowngirl Sep 08, 2010
@NeverSleeps Except if you are like that woman who jumped on the train tracks to retrieve a gym bag!
Freyja4 Sep 08, 2010
@uptowngirl: LOL OMG I saw this incident on Smoking Gun (yes, I have cable). It was funny but also hard to watch. That train came so close to hitting that drunk woman! She just fell into the tracks. I just hate how everyone above the tracks was acting. All they did was wave their arms. "Hey! Stop A woman is on the tracks." What I couldn't understand was, when at a particular moment one of those people HAD enough time to get down there and pick her up and ask for help getting her onto the platform. That must have been a wake up call for that woman though. Can't say the same about the gym bag lady. I've had a close call with a Greyhound bus before. Scary moment. For some reason my mind left me and I found myself in the middle of a busy street that hadn't stopped at the stop light just yet. I recall hitting the button. After that I can't say what provoked me to keep walking. It's happened twice in my life. The first time I was hit by a car backing out on my bike. Knocked out good. I'm scared it would happen when I am driving. I don't drive.
