City Gardening

I was raised in a family that always had a garden – albeit we lived in Florida rather than an urban area like New York City. Still, I’ve always been in the habit of keeping plants around me, even if it is a bit harder to keep them alive in my dark Brooklyn apartment.

I’ve had to look for more creative ways to get my hands on fresh foods, as it is pretty difficult to grow things like tomatoes with no backyard, front yard or worthy roof. Obviously the Greenmarkets are a great source of fare that is both local and fresh, and the CENYC (Council on the Environment of NYC), which hosts the Greenmarkets, offers “open space greening.”

This means that anyone interested in open space for gardening or horticulture can volunteer with the CENYC staff in their office or community gardens located throughout the city.

The New York Restoration Project also has a set of Garden Programs that sound really great. They do urban farming and build up community gardens all over the city. Check it out: http://www.nyrp.org/Parks_and_Gardens/Garden_Programs

When I was growing up we always had a garden. It beats the heck out of buying high priced food at the grocery store. And the fact is, we enjoyed eating what we grew because we worked hard to grow the plants.

There was a great feature in National Geographic recently about rooftop gardens, and I have lived near some good ones but my roof is definitely not compatible. It's scary to even get up there; I can only access it via the fire escape. Hopefully the next place I live in offers better gardening circumstances.

Rooftop gardens. Now that is an experience. Hey, when you live in the city, you have to compromise in some way. Why not do it with a garden to. Who said gardening can only be for suburbanites. Where there is a way to do it, think creatively and you can get it done.
