"A lot of history for a tiny street"

Gay Street is more of an alley than a street - it only extends about a block. But, it's a really beautiful street. It has lovely rowhouses and because it is alleylike, it's very quiet and has a more residential feel to it than other parts of the west village that are east of 7th avenue.
I discovered Gay street because my favorite coffee shop is on the corner of Gay and Waverly Place. It's called Joe and it is a must for a cool NY coffee shop experience. The coffee is incredible, the staff is uber hip and there is an outdoor bench area that is great for people watching on a nice day. Oh, and you can get wifi there which is a giant bonus in this neck of the woods.
This tiny street is rich with history. 12 Gay is where Mayor Jimmy Walker set up his mistress (not bad digs for a mistress) until he divorced his wife. The basement apartment of 14 Gay is where Ruth McKenney lived and wrote the series of stories for the New Yorker that would later become the successful play, My Sister Eileen: the stories were about all the peeping Tom's in the neighborhood, and how uncomfortable the living conditions were in the place that she shared with her beautiful sister, Eileen. Just four days before the play premiered, Eileen was killed in a car accident. Ruth never went to see her own play.
Mary McCarthy lived in a tiny studio at 18 Gay and had a succession of notorious one-night stands there . . . which I think is kinda cool.
Nothing really to do on the street because it's tiny and residential; but, if you're a history nerd, it's definitely worth a walk about.

Freyja4
Freyja4 Sounds interesting. It's like I say, always get to know your town. Or in this case, a neighborhood. Some of the most small places have some interesting history. I may live far, far away from you. Another state in fact, but take for instance, that the town I live in used to be ignored by indians becuase the ground wasn't good enough to seed. Or the fact that a great eatery used to be in an entirely different location much furthure away where a gun fight happened. I love learning about distant places and the history some areas of it hold. I'm a history nerd myself. In fact both history channels are on my list of favorites. Thanks for the info and if I am ever in that neck of the woods, I'll be sure to go to that coffee shop.

"A bright, and fun street"

Gay Street is a beautiful, and hidden street in Greenwich Village which offer a nice hideaway from the loud bustle of the nearby Village. It offers bleary eyed bar hoppers a nice place to condense their routes. If you blink, you might miss this street as it only stretches for one block, but it is line with beautiful houses and buildings, and nightlife is just around the corner. This is a great street to live on if you love the nightlife, and particularly The Village nightlife. It is not so hidden away in the West Village that it is inaccessible to subways, but the closest line is the 1 train at Christopher st.

"A beautiful alley"

Gay St is an alley in the Greenwich Village. It only stretches one block from Christopher St to Waverly Place. In that tiny space, there are beautiful houses. It is definitely a nice street where to live. It is one of the few streets in Manhattan where I did not hear a siren sound.
Gay St is in a perfect place, right close to different subways line, the NJ path train, and the bars and restaurants of the Greenwich and West Villages.

"Amazing street in an amazing part of NYC"

A beautiful little street in Greenwich Village offers wary bar hoppers a nice place to call home. It's small, to say the least, only stretching one block, but that one block is packed with nice residential buildings. Because it is in the heart of Greenwich Village nightlife is easy to come by and for a party lover it is the absolute best place to call home.
