Bleecker Park is good, the JJ Walker park on Hudson & Leroy is less crowded and very safe.

There's a great kids park on Hudson and Bleecker. I always see a million kids playing here. Also, the entire stretch of the Westside Highway is park so if you want to picnic with your kids, that's a great place too. Oh, and Washington Square Park is, technically, Greenwich, but it's quite close and enormous.
