Independence Avenue in The Bronx, New York is pretty much far away from the city. There really is not many things to do as far as shopping or eating out. This is an ideal place for families or those seeking a quiet retirement. This area is more in touch with nature then the city.

"South end---residential, parks, etc. ok."
I've walked the south end of independence Ave. multiple times---below 236th street it is primarily residential.
There are a few parks, a school, but this street is mostly residential. Parts of this street are near shopping areas--mainly 235th.
The south end of this street is near the Spuyten Duvyl (sp?) metro north station which takes you to Grand Central Station in ~25 minutes.
The cab service in the area is excellent--Seaman's Cab Company is safe, reliable, and very popular in the area.
The homes are beautiful and appear to be single family homes. There is a famous condo building called "white hall" where Ed Sullivan lived. It contains doctors offices which are handy for residents in the area.
