"Gunspoint"

Commonly knowns as "gunspoint" to locals, lots and lots of serious crime here mixed with good lower class families trying to make a decent living. In the brief time I was in greenspoint, car was broken into, friends apartment had someone try to get in through a window, and had a few unfriendly encounters with locals after dark while minding my own business.

Spent a lot of time here in the mid 2000's and it was downright scary after dark. Lots of gang activity, murders in public places, etc. Not really somewhere you want to be if you can avoid it. I think the *serious* crime has been down in recent years on the bright side after Houston Police moved into the (now failing) Greenspoint mall.

It might be revitalized someday, but I doubt it.

"Gunspoint"

In the North part of Houston, near I-45 and the North Sam Houston Parkway, is where you will find Greenspoint. Main roads traveled in this area are Imperial Valley Drive, Rankin Road, and Airline Drive. Metro Buses run in the area, and it is conveniently located near Bush Intercontinental Airport, but the majority of commuters use their own vehicles.

Greenspoint is an older, established area; however, there is some new construction and building of subdivisions while older ones such as Imperial Valley remain. Apartment complexes are found on just about every street here, and typically at affordable rates, but you might want to check the area at night before you decide to lease one around here.

Greenspoint, also known as “Gunspoint”, has closed down a large amount of its shopping facilities and restaurants over the past decade. Greenspoint Mall is a central location for this area, and after publicized crime sprees, the mall now seems like a ghost town. Crime rates are extremely high in this area, and I would personally be afraid to be anywhere around here alone at night.

The one positive thing I can find about this location is that it has a nice amount of large oil companies and employers for the Houston area. If you are willing to bring your lunch to work, you may land a decent job around here. Since Bush Intercontinental Airport is nearby, you may find business men and women staying at one of the various hotels by the airport, which seem to be for the most part out of the scary crime zone.

"Interesting mix of homes, apartments and Gunspoint"

The mall, Greenspoint Mall, is lovingly know as Gunspoint Mall. If I remember correctly, there was an incident at the mall quite a few years ago involving a man with a gun and the deaths of several docile mall-goers. It was all over Houston Chronicle for a while. Before that, the mall was a common place for robberies, and now the mall just off the intersection of Beltway 8 and I-45 has earned what some feel is an appropriate nickname. I've been to this mall several times. Granted, it has never been an actual visit inside the mall, but my time outside the mall has given me a pretty good idea of the area. I have worked for JDRF in helping them set up their annual Walk for the Cure, which has taken place here several times. The surrounding area has many office buildings, restaurants, hotels and of course, shopping. It also has terrific tree cover and plant-life with streets that wind around nicer buildings and hotels. The hotels and apartments that are situated right next to the mall are fairly expensive, but the houses on the other side of the Beltway are fairly reasonably priced. The subdivision is nice, clean and well-put together. Schools are a little rough around the edges, but Houston is fairly liberal in choosing a place to go to school. Private schools are always an option as well. Even if you are just visiting, the area has a lot of shopping, hotels, entertainment and all the amenities Houston has to offer.
