What's the best place to live around San Diego if you are a couple who work from home and are vegan?

We're considering relocating to San Diego from Vancouver, Canada. My husband lived there for a few years in his twenties and really liked it. We'd prefer a house to a condo, we live in a condo now and would like more space. We don't know if we'd want a car right away, maybe. We'd like somewhere safe and clean, but not too far from everything. Not far into the suburbs, we like to walk or run. Being close to veg friendly places or health food stores would be nice too. Since we work from home we don't have to commute but want to be close enough to get out and meet people and be social.
