What are the best neighborhoods in SD for culture and young families?

My family and I are considering relocating from San Francisco to San Diego. We are looking for a neighborhood that is good for young families as well as culture, things to do, etc. We're currently looking at Hillcrest as a possibility, but wanted to get feedback from locals. What do you think?

Hillcrest is a great diverse neighborhood in San Diego. There are families there, but not really known for being a family neighborhood. Neighboring areas like Mission Hills, North Park, South Park tend to be more family centered areas. All these neighborhoods surround Balboa Park which is a wonderful cultural center of San Diego. I've lived in Bankers Hill and Little Italy for 10 years, but once I had kids we moved over to a little mellower area in South Park.

San Diego and Culture are mutually exclusive.

I would suggest Chula Vista for its culture and suit for the young couple
