Train horns all hours of the night.

I recently visited San Diego and from our hotel all we could hear at night were incredibly loud train horns - and I'm talking 3am, 4am - it never stopped? Now I know why the hotel offered ear plugs. How can the city allow this? And the horns were not sounded one time, its at least 5 times within a 5 minute stretch. Would definitely put me off staying downtown again.

You are not alone. The noise in San Diego especially along the waterfront is a known issue. Something is being done about it - you can see on the CCDC website: http://www.ccdc.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/projects.quietzone And here is a great independent website explaining the situation with updates: http://www.quietzonesd.info/FAQ.html

I am sure this will get fixed, I know many visitors to the city who have complained about the noise and would not return.

How often do they go off?

Having stayed downtown it seemed to be every two hours, apparently something is being done about it. Stayed at the Westin, can't imagine staying closer to the trains around the Hard Rock and Marriot. Here's a Facebook page with updates, they can't fix it soon enough. http://www.facebook.com/SanDiegoQuietZone
