Best Tours

This is totally cheesy, but even though I live in New York, I really like going on tours. I went on a ghosts of the West Village tour on Halloween and it was one of the coolest things I've done since I have lived here. I found out all kinds of interesting historical facts (Washington Square Park has thousands of dead bodies under it) and fun haunted facts (people can't bring in the Tompkins free school). We had this really garish, theatrical widow of a tour guide; she was amazing. It was just such a cool thing to do. I know there is a Murder Mystery tour in the WV called Accomplice . . . but, other than those, does anyone have tour recommendations for tourists and New Yorkers alike?

PS1 in Queens did a GREAT art and architecture tour of the city a while back, guided by artists and architects who live here. It was definitely one of those insider's things to do, with a lot of off-beat destinations. Almost sure no one who took one of the tours was a tourist, though.

@NeverSleeps It was definitely a summertime activity, and I believe it was related to some festival or other they had. It would be worthwhile to check come springtime. Just found their description of guided tours through the facilities, though. which are ongoing and also led by artists. Sounds pretty good: http://ps1.org/visit/ Led by scholars and artists who have recently exhibited at the Museum, P.S.1's guided tours offer adult and school groups an introduction to cutting-edge contemporary art. Tour discussions focus on themes, techniques, and imagery of the art on view, as well as the personal perspective of lecturing artists. Groups larger than 25 must be broken up into two. Tour rates are given to groups with a minimum of 10 people. Adults: $13 Seniors: $11 Students (college and up): $11 Members: $10
